Professional Counseling

Nebraska Methodist College offers free, confidential counseling to all currently enrolled students. These services are to assist the students in making adjustments in their academic and personal life. Licensed counselors trained in a variety of issues staff the counseling office.

Common counseling issues include test anxiety, relationships/codependency, stress management, time management, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders, depression, grief and loss issues, adjusting to college life, parenting/family issues, and career/vocational issues.

Confidentiality

Strict confidentiality is maintained at all times. No information is released without written authorization from the student. All counseling records are kept separate from other College records and are accessible only by Professional Counseling staff members. However, there are limits to confidentiality. Frequently Asked Questions About Professional Counseling

"How do I schedule an appointment?"
Counseling is available to all students who are able to come to campus for their appointments. Students are encouraged to initiate contact with the counseling office, although referrals can be made by faculty, staff, parents, or concerned friends. All information is kept in the strictest confidence in accordance with the law. To schedule an appointment, please contact Molly Atherton at (402) 354-7213 or Melissa Hoffman at (402) 354-7212.

"Where are the counseling offices?"
The counseling offices are open during normal business hours (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) Monday through Friday. Evening appointments are available upon request. Offices are located on the first floor of the Clark Center, office numbers 1237-1239. In case of an emergency, please call 911 or proceed to the hospital emergency room.

"Can I communicate over the Internet with my counselor?"
Please do not e-mail confidential information to counselors. E-mail is not secure and can be read in transit by people other than the recipient. Therefore, please use e-mail only to request information about counseling services or for other matters that are not confidential in nature.

Please do not contact counselors by e-mail in case of an emergency requiring immediate action. It cannot be ensured that an email will be read when it is first received. In case of an emergency, please call 911 or go to the closest hospital emergency room.
